Funniest/Most Insightful Comments Of The Week At Techdirt

Posted

This week, our first place winner on the insightful side is an anonymous comment about the Canadian YouTuber who was visited by the cops after building a Flock-like camera to track cop cars:

If the cops are doing nothing wrong, then they have nothing to hide.

In second place, it’s a comment about Malcolm Gladwell’s strange strawman assertion that people say the bad behavior of police is caused by there being too many of them:

No, the police are badly behaved because they rarely face repercussions.

For editor’s choice on the insightful side, we start out with Kinetic Gothic and another comment about the Canadian YouTuber:

I was particularly amused by their concerns this could be used to locate their homes, since unlike most of us, cops do have the option to -not- drive home in the vehicles they patrol the town in.

Next, it’s an anonymous comment about the impossibility of perfect content moderation:

I dunno, I’ve also done and overseen moderation work on that kind of scale, and I would be deeply hesitant to say we always get things correct. I’ve dealt with enough community blowback over the years — sometimes stuff I thought was justified; sometimes stuff I thought was exaggerated; sometimes stuff I thought was invented out of whole cloth — to know not only do errors happen but that people can have very different opinions over what those errors were and what ‘the right way’ to do things would have been.

Facebook is a titanic entity with enormous resources to throw at the problem, but the problem with moderation of any sort is that the need for it scales faster than the supply. The flood of output from slop engines is only making the issue worse, especially if you’re somebody like YT or FB, where there’s lots of perceived value in shouting over everyone else.

Over on the funny side, our first place winner is an anonymous comment about Trump hiding the IRS report on his Big Beautiful Bill:

Hey now, be fair to the IRS, they might actually be having trouble figuring this shit out. I mean haven’t they been cut down to like six guys and a beat-up old Tandy 1000 at this point?

In second place, it’s MrWilson with an idea for the Canadian YouTuber and his camera:

Just tell the cops that you’re setting up a service to track all the Canadian girlfriends that Americans have claimed existed. I bet even Canadian cops think tracking girlfriends, fictional or otherwise, with mass surveillance camera networks is fine.

For editor’s choice on the funny side, we start out with an anonymous comment about Brendan Carr threatening journalists for covering polls Trump doesn’t like:

I’m sure Mr. Carr has security footage of Antifa vandals cutting a 350-foot long slice in the polls with a box cutter and then pouring fertilizer into them. He’s just not releasing it yet.

Finally, it’s another anonymous comment about Malcolm Gladwell, this time with a simple retort to the description of him as “one of America’s foremost thinkers”:

That’s all for this week, folks!
